The charismathics smart security interface PIV middleware does the job for you when dealing with PIV cards. It is the first PIV middleware successfully evaluated by the NIST - National Institute of Standards and Technology in accordance to the recent NIST PIV Program (NPIVP), SP 800-73-2 specification. It can handle almost any sort of PIV card;  it also allows creating and managing profiles on such cards which are later used as a digital identity to gain secure access to sensitive information. These digital identities can be easily used to sign and/or encrypt information e.g. emails or PDF documents as well as allow access to them only to the intended people with a granted right. Furthermore, in cooperation with security software such as PGP, a working machine can be fully encrypted in order to ensure access to a handful of trusted people; this allows a company to prevent accidental or intended loss of valuable sensitive data.
