What is the difference between a smart card and a USB token?

There is no real difference. A smart card needs a card reader whereas a USB token has a reader built-in. Furthermore, a smart card fits into a wallet and can portray the holder’s picture. On the other hand, a USB token can be attach to a key chain and might have flash memory to store additional data. Both can also be used to gain physical access to offices.
